At my last client based contract I managed to avoid having a phone on my desk despite being relocated around the open plan office several times.

A number of times someone would call a phone a few desks away saying they couldn't find me on the phone system. Loved it.
It's a funny thread with a serious point. Personally I get irritated by people who hide behind email instead of trying to contact someone - "have you done it? yes I sent an email and I'm waiting for a response." It's just lazy and passing the buck, phone the guy up, leave a voicemail, trying calling again instead of waiting days between email reminders.

Nearly as bad as the fckers who send their stream of consciousness via multiple emails like it was chat or something. take a fcking breath, have a think, compose all your thoughts in one email then press send ffs.

I've a simple rule. Use a phone if its important (a bell rings and people notice it). Email may get noticed but it really does depend how busy I am and I trying to follow the practice of only looking at email first thing in the morning or immediately after lunch. Then doing proper work.

Currently dealing with issues in SA. Their phone system is down and there's an email delay of about 5 minutes... so now we're using IM.
