When I first met my husband's parents they kept offering me a bun with my coffee and I thought it was very strange that they would think I wanted a bread bun. Then they'd bring out these little cakes...

Soft: "bap", Crusty: "cob" is the rule in this bit of the East Midlands. "Cob" is also the generic or default term; for example, the sandwich emporium over the road from me is called "The Cob Shop".
