Oddbins are chancers over price, I smoke havanas when having a drink and the charge about 30% more in the shop that the tabbaconists 20 yards away.

But some of the staff in oddbins have a great depth of knowledge in malts and I could spend 10 minutes just chatting to the manager when I went in to pick up a bottle. They usually had a couple of taster bottles under the counter and are quite willing to offer up a couple of quick drams when you were in, also they did make an attempt to train the staff in what they were selling.

My local corner shop sells a limited range of basic booze and probably gears itself towards selling to 15 year olds that get their big brothers to buy them drink.

Getting a cheap price is not my motivation when buying drink.

Pubs are a bit different, it's not like you can sit down for a quiet pint in Tesco... although that would be great while the wife does the shopping

For one thing, my local Tesco probably has a comparable wine selection to my local wine shop (oddbins or thresher, can't remember) at least in terms of shelf-footage.

For another, I imagine online wine buying has hurt from the other side. So supermarkets make buying plonk on impulse or as part of your weekly shop easier (and cheaper), and those who like their wine can have it delivered to their house.

Creditors accepting lower payments only makes sense if the company can demonstrate they have a way to turn things round. Otherwise they'd just end up owing more.

started a topic OddBods in administration

    OddBods in administration

    Oddbins to go into administration

Hardly surprising, as Threshers always seemed significantly cheaper (even if they had less variety), and neither could hope to compete with supermarkets.

Seems like chains such as Tescos and Sainsbury's are slowly slurping the life out of smaller more specialist shops, and will be the only shops left soon.
