Could be and there's a precedent within the NHS. I dunno if it's still the same but in the 1980s hospital consultants were encouraged to do research out of NHS funds and still claim the IP themselves. It was seen as a cost effective way of advancing research.

It's hard to claim - my view is that it that relief was created specifically to appease pharma industry.

I'm more concerned that it seems you have to open up your work to the public, since advancing science is only the case if other people can see what you're up to.I don't think you necessarily need to open your work up to the public, actually one of the conditions is that your company has to own all the IP generated.Subcontractors
You can't claim R&D Relief under the SME Scheme if you are a subcontractor - that is, if you have been subcontracted to do the work on behalf of somebody else. But, even if your company is small or medium-sized, you may still be able to claim, as a subcontractor, under the Large Company Scheme.

Actually it also says
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/cirdmanual/cird81550.htmHMRC accepts that where the terms of R&D require that the IP is to be placed in the public domain then the condition is satisfied.Last edited by doodab; 25 March 2011, 11:19.

In a nutshell, you have to do actual research and development that pushes forward the state of the art. You can't just learn how to do something that other people already know how to do.Originally posted by d000hg View PostNo I'm buttering him up (not on the arse!) to get advice how to make HMRC give me free money too.
