Come on then, what does it do that can't be done already by a cheaper more ergonomically friendly device?

Casual sofa surfing is a given, what else?

I can think of plenty it can’t do, it brings nothing to the table yet it has you all mesmerized like a bunch of drooling goons.

    I don't get it.

Nah, its Apple kit and the model 1 is now 'retro' so i'll be getting twice what I paid for it I reckon.

If any tape jockeys want to club together and make an offer, i'll sort out a monthly payment plan for you.

Seriously though, those who ask what its for, just the ability to lie on the sofa at night and remotely control my other PC's and even run development IDE's remotely makes it worth its asking price for me. I'd previously use a laptop for this but the iPad is smaller, uses much less juice, doesn't toast my knackers, doesn't run out of power after a few hours and doesn't need a power cable trailing across the lounge.

Granted, I didn't have a clue what i'd use it for when I bought it as i'm normally a dick when it comes to buying gadgets for the sake of it but have found it to be genuinely useful for 90% of the tasks i'd normally lug my laptop down for. Had a Netbook for a while in that role but just found it was wank.

That's a bit like saying Christopher Columbus was the first person to discover America. Except for all the people that had been living there for years.

I had a proper play with an iPad the other day. Cynicism aside, the touch screen and the way the gui responds are quite impressive, as is the feel and lightness of the thing, although there's absolutely no reason why a Windows or Android system couldn't do exactly the same (sorry fanbois, but that's just how it is). I was somewhat underwhelmed by the screen though. This belonged to my Step-Father who has a load of books on there, but I'm not sure it's a screen I'd want to read off. My 3 year old cheapo Dell laptop is much nicer for that (even if it does burn my legs).

I'd use one for browsing and remote desktop to my server at home.

Oh well. Better start saving up.

Micro hard drive based MP3 players already existed when the iPod came out, all the iPod did differently was the look and feel.

I have a Plan B idea. Buying second hand ones and shipping them out to remote parts of Africa so they can be used as multi media table mats.
Except that you can buy cheap alternatives for as little as £100 already, and the iPad will never be that cheap, you're onto something.

I think we have to look at what we use our laptops/tablets/iPhones et al for.

For me if I want to run multiple Linux distro VM's, code my bollocks off, etc I'll get a desktop or a super laptop. No issue. Actually for the VM's I get a pSeries or Coolthreads but we'll let that go for now...

But for me I just want to surf, email, facebook, wank, do spreaddies, docs, presentations, iPad/tablet does it.

I can see a market for it even though when it came out I couldn't - realistically, how much do you really use your lappy for heavy tasks?
