What Nick said. Black backgrounds, esp with large font green or red text seem to be used by nutcases or far right groups. You should use orange background and purple text. Much better.

You could try this as your search engine. They claim a black background saves energy, and have a handy "Watt hours saved" counter at the bottom so you can see how green you are. However Google, on turning of the lights for earth hour, claim that it saves no energy at all.

Historically (as in, back in the Nineties) black backgrounds were associated with porn, amateurish GeoCities sites with animated rainbows, and nutcases. I don't know if that association still lingers in the general public's mind though.
Of course, you aren't limited to black and white. You could have nice stars or an interesting repeating pattern; or you could avoid the decision completely by simply ensuring that none of the background is visible.

Why is there not more of them?
My site is much easier on the eyes with the colours inverted but like a sheep I use a white background because everyone else does too...
