Partition magic didn't actually stuff my disk but I used it on an old laptop to do a dual Windows/Unix boot, and then, after deciding LINUX was total tulipe, could never actually manage to get the space back again. I am still worried what is going on in those unrecoverable Mb. I am sure some sinister and malignant UNIXY entity is festering and growing in there and will one day burst forth to seek its revenge.

No they didn't, they occupied all of India and what is now Bangladesh. India and Pakistan both took on the British hierarchy, in state and local rule together with the official structure and processes.

A couple of the root causes of Indian success was partly due to a secular government where law was independent of any particular religion, and partly due to having a closed economy with high taxes on imports to encourage internal growth. There were downsides to this approach too mind and it's not all a bed of roses even now. It will prosper and grow however as a country of 1.1 Billion people are bound to get involved sooner or later in world trade!!!!

Pakistan and India both suffer from corruption and the notion that wealth can buy forgiveness for almost any crime (so long as it's not in the papers!!). Pakistan was largely sponsored by the United States whereas India was sponsored by Russia so a) there is little chance of much economic aid flowing into India from the U.K or the U.S.A whereas Musharraf was obliged to allow overflights by US military aircraft during the invasion of Afghanistan because of his (predominantly military) reliance on this aid much to the chagrin of a large part of the population.

As an side - Afghanistan and the Taliban regime were initially sponsored, encouraged and armed by the Pakistani secret services. Indirectly this was also supported and encouraged by the USA (who ultimately pull the strings) It was seen as a useful to maintain 'friendly' control over Afghanistan as this was one of the main routes required by Russia to sell gas to the Middle East - hence their support for Mujhadeen fighters during the Russian Afghanistan conflict.

Pre-partition India was "ruled" by Britain (poorly, I might add, but that's not a surprise given the state of our country right now), and it was indeed the empire that created and then forced through the segregation of different religious peoples within the country.

So it was Britain that created Pakistan. And yes Pakistan is a tulipe place, of that there is no doubt. After all, it was a Pakistani that leaked out nuclear secrets to the middle east. Also, their economy is based on illegal drug exports.

Of course, Britain also took all the wealth out of the region before it allowed them to become "independent" (in 1947 or thereabouts?).

Out this lesson we can gather that:-
1. Britain is the cause of the current nuclear tension in the middle east and of the future nuclear war with/within that region.
2. Pakistan is a crap place.
3. India, though p*ssed off at Britain for looting their country of riches, is appreciative of the fact that most of the Muslims left and went to Pakistan.
4. Hamsa Hook is not Indian, he has a Pakistani family background and is Muslim.
5. There will soon be more Pakistanis in Britain than in Pakistan, due to them wanting to create their own "state" here.

Your obsession with stereotypes obviously left you unaware that the key economics indicators of the Pakistani economy have actually been good in recent times and they are actually making 'progress'. As is the case with you, the progress is small but welcome nonetheless.

Surely not the only reason? In your world maybe! A world in which everything is either black or white, mad mullah or gleaming athiest, where there's only ever one explanation to every question. Personally, I think there's probably more than one reason behind Pakistan's economic progress in recent times. However, it's interesting to see that you've moved the debate on from 'the mad-mullahs are complete failures' to 'the mad-mullahs are only succesful because we give them money'. Small but welcome progress MM. Well done!

Incidentally, the UK kindly gives India a couple of hundred million per year in "aid"

It must be to help them build more call centres so they can take even more jobs away from the UK

I am sure they will reciprocate the generoisty when the UK is bankrupt

Its all about "fairness" after all
