Cheap hosting rarely includes backup, although in theory many places would be able to find a copy if they tried hard enough. When I looked into hosting, decent backup cost more than the hosting itself.
Maybe they dont care about their reputation ......
Customer churn is a built in feature of many telco and ISP models. They except a certain amount of churn and as long as it's less than their planned limit, they do not care.
Read the contract. The contract I have with my hosting ISP is quite specific about who is responsible for backups. What that means is that if I lose data and ask them to restore it, it's chargeable; if they lose data then its their responsibility, though they cannot guarantee to restore bang up to date copies. I keep my own backups.
There's also the problem of web hosting companies getting taken over, and service levels plummeting. Basic risk management says you should be prepared to switch suppliers at the drop of a hat.
why huge potential? Do these web hosts not back stuff up? Agreed in this case there was something that went awry, but in the main are they not obliged to keep backups? Loss of reputation would encourage them to do this, shirley?

I would love to post the f'ups at my place on here but I would rather not as I am sure it would lead to my instant removal from site should another contractor or permie2contractor spot this and mention it...
Nah. You just start each post with 'A friend I know...'
