I've had it done a few times and its never been a problem. Just use Earex for 3 days and then go to the docs and the nurse will do it for you. After days of being deaf in one ear you can hear ants rushing around after its great.
One thing is the stuff that comes out is disgusting

Had it done on honeymoon (!) after I had got an ear infection and went deaf. It is incredible how much can fit in there
Feels great afterwards. Do it.

NB first person to suggest "Hopi ear candles" gets a fisting.
I had it done last year after much pain and deafness and a long battle with my GP. I kept getting fobbed off with olive oil, drops, etc but in the end they gave way and all was solved in 10 seconds. It's a great feeling, you can hear birds singing 5 miles away. You wouldn't believe the size of the lump that comes out.

I had my ears syringed last year after a huge build up of wax. One week of pre-treating my ears with prescription drops, followed by syringing using a pressure regulated device.

(gently warmed) olive oil in ear, lie on side for 20 mins. Same thin every day for 2 weeks. If not successful, at least 3 times every day for 2 weeks. Then if still blocked, Doc may give you "irrigation".
Yes, I know how hard it is to find all that time.
PS the normal function of ear wax is to migrate to the outer ear and come out. The problem is when it doesn't come out. Cotton buds can compact it and make this worse.
The aerosol saline spray (pedantically, pressurised but not aerosol) is "Audiclean" from Boots, about a fiver, haven't tried it yet. In the US they have stuff (glycerine?) with an effervescing agent, can work well.
