I donate to charities personally. Is it best to do it through company?

Yes: when it's client-led and therefore a donation from the company, not a personal one from me. Their staff are forever doing sponsored fun-runs to break the monotony of their careers. Also, it sometimes impresses clients more to give £20 to their favourite charity than spend £200 entertaining them at a restaurant.
Oh, and Farepak that one time.

I have not donated to registered charities, but other areas. I have sponsored a local fun run and squash team for our fitness club, but the thing that confuses me; Sponsorship, liable to VAT, donation which they can put towards the sponsorship; VAT Free

MyCo has never made a financial charitable donation.
It has provided many, many hours of my time in return for free advertising.
For example, there are charity newsletters out there with
"Typeset & printed by CraniumCo"
on the bottom.

the tax efficiency thing - paying it from the company disqualifies the donation from tax relief at their end i believe, so it's kind of tight-fisted on my part unless i bump up the amount to account for this.
