I placed a couple of bets on philson run and point barrow at 31-1 each.

Used betfair and got a £25 free bet with a £25 deposit (you don't get the free amount until after the race tho)... looks like you can get some decent odds there too, Kelami is currently at 74-1, Backbeat at 169-1

I was told to avoid horses carrying less than 10 stone as it means they aren't good enough to attract a handicap weight, not sure how good this advice is as I usually just pick something that sounds nice.

Tony McCoy is the most successful jump jockey ever yet he's never won the national... maybe worth a punt?

I have only bet on the National once. I bet on a horse called Dark Ivy. It didn't win, infact it didn't get round because it was shot early on.

I backed that one - class horse but broke its neck at Beechers (no shot necessary). Its body was still there when they came round again and I haven't bet on the National since.

I usually go for the Irish horses too and always an e/w bet.... I love the national - can't wait for the season to start properly at the Curragh (prefer the flat) ...I'll be home more often then

I'm no expert on the Gee Gee's, but my advice for the National is to look at anything that has form (previously been placed) over 3 miles. This rules out most of the nags straight away.

It's a mega race for the horses and a completely lottery - which is why pro-gamblers won't touch it - too many variables - it's for the mug punters only and the odds reflect this.

I'm a mug though and am going for Slim Pickings (12-1) on the nose and Hedgehunter (40-1) as a throwaway each way bet.

A good jockey with history of riding at the National. Also favs don't do that well.

Some of the best returns I've had have been on a place with a good price 25/1+

Allow plenty of time for travel. All sorts of traffic warnings going on up here.

You want a big chested horse. Lungs like a barrel.
You want a stayer not a sprinter.
Look back for a 3+ miler in early Jan. Then rested till the National.
