Firstly, only a handful of people do regular work out of that list. Really only the top 5 or 6 are treating it more than a hobby - and only 1 or 2 are doing it as their job.
Secondly, the algorithm contests are entirely separate. Those are hour-long coding contests testing maths and algorithm skills and are entirely for fun. The software design/dev stuff is fairly typical J2EE or .NET work in the main.

But anyway we digress. I didn't set out to sell you guys on TC, just to know if anyone here was a member...
