That just isn't true. They don't do pieces of work for £100. Development (coding) generally pay ~£250 and design (UML) ~£400 per chunk of work. With bonuses it works out more like double that.

    Take a look here: http://www.topcoder.com/tc?&ph=112&module=LeaderBoard
Those amounts are the BONUSES those guys earned in 3 months, they don't include the actual payments.

Are you sure you guys aren't confusing it with RentaCoder, which IS full of Asians working at £8 per hour?

Yeah, but even the absolute top person only got $96,246.86 (which is only £48,292.34 according to XE.com). Whilst this is kind of impressive, part of it was a prize fund, and on top of that the person probably had to work all the hours God sends to get it. If you look down at the number 40 person who got $895.52 (£449.33), well I earn that in one 7.5 hour day, which is far less impressive.

When you compare the fact that the top 50% (and almost 100% of the coders) on this site are probably on a steady £100,000 per year or more, you soon realise that whilst TopCoder may be better than some other sites out there, it still has a long way to go to match those contractors with their own Ltd companies working in the traditional way.

And not just that, but AIR, Topcoder is some sort of geek penis-measuring thing where you have to be a super geniuses capable of coming up with complex algorithms in machine code inside 15 minute deadlines.

Where I work everyone is on £500+/day and half of the contractors don't even know what an algorithm IS.

Work in London. Even support monkeys can earn that sort of money here.
