That's why I will always think of today as Setting Orange, The Aftermath 13, Year of Our Lady of Discord 3173.

I don't think the Romans had quite got the hang of arithmetic.

I stand corrected - I always thought it was Gregory that added the months, rather than changing the leap year thingy.

No, the Roman calendar had 10 months and the extra two were added by Julius Caesar with the introduction of the Julian calendar. Linky.Originally posted by TheFaQQer View PostThere were only 10 months in the Julian calendar - the extra two were added by Pope Gregory.
And it's in Wikipedia, so it must be true, because Wikipedia is never, ever, ever wrong, so there

You would expect only ten months from somebody called Julian I think.

February was never the 12th month under the Romans. It was, however, the last month of the year.Originally posted by NickFitz View PostAh, but the year used to start at the beginning of March, making February the twelfth month. This is why the extra day in a leap year comes at the end of February, rather than at the end of December.
Of course, all this was before you came to this wretched planet...

No. Pope Gregory introduced July and August, named after Julius Caesar and Augustus Caesar respectively. The other months are Roman names, I believe.Originally posted by wendigo100 View PostI love November.
I don't like January or February. Was it Pope Gregory who invented them?
Janus had two faces (as per Sean Bean in that Bond film), hence seen at the end of one year / beginning of another.
February derives it's name from the Latin for purification, which they celebrated mid-month.
Both January and February were added to the Roman calendar in about 700BC - prior to that the Roman calendar regarded winter as monthless.

It's normally quite a pleasure to move into Autumn and get relief from the long, sweltering Summer. Changing seasons and all that. Trouble is, for about the last five years the seasons don't seem to have actually changed. It's only because the leaves have fallen off the trees and it's dark a bit earlier that you even know anything's different. I'm actually hoping for a severe Winter, just for a bit variety.
