It's normally quite a pleasure to move into Autumn and get relief from the long, sweltering Summer. Changing seasons and all that. Trouble is, for about the last five years the seasons don't seem to have actually changed. It's only because the leaves have fallen off the trees and it's dark a bit earlier that you even know anything's different. I'm actually hoping for a severe Winter, just for a bit variety.

Lots of Cabbages
Brussell Sprouts just starting
Lots of Carrots still growing

Swedes just fattening up

and that's without counting the greenhouse

No. Pope Gregory introduced July and August, named after Julius Caesar and Augustus Caesar respectively. The other months are Roman names, I believe.

Janus had two faces (as per Sean Bean in that Bond film), hence seen at the end of one year / beginning of another.

February derives it's name from the Latin for purification, which they celebrated mid-month.

Both January and February were added to the Roman calendar in about 700BC - prior to that the Roman calendar regarded winter as monthless.

I don't think the Romans had quite got the hang of arithmetic.

Ah, but the year used to start at the beginning of March, making February the twelfth month. This is why the extra day in a leap year comes at the end of February, rather than at the end of December.

Of course, all this was before you came to this wretched planet...
