    February was never the 12th month under the Romans. It was, however, the last month of the year.

        No, the Roman calendar had 10 months and the extra two were added by Julius Caesar with the introduction of the Julian calendar. Linky.

          I stand corrected - I always thought it was Gregory that added the months, rather than changing the leap year thingy.
