Since when? Has the changed the law recently then?

Up until recently I thought they were made illegal a couple of years ago, until a news article said they were about to be made illegal.

It turns out they were about to be made illegal a couple of years ago, but the motion got shelved and has recently been resurected...

It used to be under one of the Wireless Telegraphy acts (illegal to act on the information in police broadcasts or something) until someone got off with the point that there is no information in a radar broadcast, only carrier.

Is is illegal to use a jammer though - you can get done for perverting the course of justice or similar.

The fact that garage door openers just happen to cover the spectrum of course....

"Accident blackspot" is an area of a certain size within which there were at least 3 deaths on the road in a year. E.g., 1 accident on a nearby motorway, 1 man had heart attack while driving (or pulled over), 1 teenager pushed off overpass in a fight: accident blackspot! Put in a "Safety Camera" and behold! Next year the figures will be reduced, proving that the camera works.

Why would that be? Safety Cameras are there to encourage drivers to keep below the speed limit, so how can a device which draws your attention to the presence of a Safety Camera, and thereby ensures that you will drive below the speed limit, be illegal?

That's more like it. We can't go banning first time offenders for a paltry 93mph on a motorway when off-duty coppers are let off for doing 156mph because they were "testing their reflexes".

A friend of mine claims that someone he knew got a QC in at about £1000 to argue his case in the county court.

Judge was so put off by the constant objections from the QC on points of law, that he dished out a huge fine, but no ban or penalty points.

Yes it is. It is however not illegal to have a garage door opener on your car. Also its not illegal to have it go "faulty" and try to open the garage 24/7
