I still use IT Jobs Watch https://www.itjobswatch.co.uk/contract.aspx to get a feel for current contract rates. I filter by my job title and then sort it by open job vacancies (and ignore anything with a relatively low number of live job vacancies)Last edited by Frenzil; 29 October 2025, 09:14.

I have a feel from what I used to be on and stick around that. 450 outside 600 inside but beggars can't be choosers in this day and age so prepared to be a lot more flexible when the gigs pop up. Rather be in a lower paid gig than on the bench. Not like there are multiple gigs around to have a choice.

i try to guess what they'll pay, ask for 20% more, and then haggle from there.
(usually get close to the most they'll pay)
but then I usually know who i'm dealing with, since i tend to work for the same consultancies time and again.

Are there any particular sources for the job ads you use e.g. LinkedIn?Originally posted by ladymuck View PostI tend to look at what rates are being advertised job ads and what I'd like charge to keep me in the style I'd like to become accustomed to.

Where do you go to benchmark day rates?
Where are you going to find out how to pitch your day rate?
I use JobServe but it's pretty dated. There are also median figures on IT Jobs Watch but that feels archaic too.
A friend of mine showed me https://www.levels.fyi/ for permies. I wished we had something like this for day rate contractors.
