In the case of both Putin and Jinping the pool of successors is very small - I mean someone will succeed them inevitably, but its not like there is a large pool of strong candidates. Both men arrested/retired/bumped off all the competition. The chaos that might follow their demise is a worry in itself, given all the nukes and so on.
