One of the best lessons (no actually, the best lesson) i learned as a young contractor was to not worry about being ghosted, or if I have ghosted someone else.

I used to drive myself nuts about why some recruiter had not replied to a perfect application, if the client had requested an interview or if I had been made an offer. Not worrying about this stuff and just moving on saves a huge amount of mental energy and frustration.

I get that recruiters are busy and can’t possibly get back to everyone around every role and enquiry, so i don’t feel bad about doing the same to them when i’m not looking. I’ve not known this to cause any issues and have lots of recruiter connections who i get on great with and have known for years despite them or I ghosting the other multiple times in the past.

I can understand the agent being peeved at being ghosted. However, I hope they are the sort that never ghosts a candidate when it becomes clear that they're not going to earn anything from them.

It doesn't take much to respond to an enquiry from a 1st degree connection, and I think it's important to acknowledge the contact, at the very least. Randoms, who invited you to apply for stuff that bears no resemblance to your profile, can sod off.

Sometimes, recruiters often "reach out" for reasons other than a legitimate opportunity:

• Intelligence gathering on behalf of competitors, even current clients etc.
• Gathering Data / Information / Contacts

That said, a courteous reply to a hello does no harm. I keep current client details confidential anyway
