Not sure if they're taking off, because I don't bother with social media. But there are open source platforms now like Mastodon, which is part of Fediverse
He tried to buy a 30% share in Gab but they want to remain independent. If he is well advised he would just set up mastodon servers under that domain, posts can then be shared with gab and other platforms on the fediverse as Gab is just a cut of mastodon. Possible that it is mastadon underneath it.
The fediverse/mastodon branches will take down Twitter in a couple of years.
Donald actually called me up a few minutes after I posted that. Wanted my advice.
He will join in a few months, once they have scaled it, the site will eventually get 50-100 million users. Twitter were idiots chucking him out, it's fairly easy to set these things up now and they are losing tens of millions of users each time it happens. Older people with disposable income.

He launched his own platform now anyway. "From the desk of Donald Trump"... you can see his posts (nobody else's) and like them. I think those are the only options so as social networks go it's a bit limited.
