If people / companies want to pay for it then crack on, if the majority of the populus agree on a tax for it crack on. if the UK government offers "aid" for it then I will complain.

But I find it strange that these companies did not step up and give their money when they were looking to repair / maintain the building, as someone said on the radio- its a bit like a distant relative dying: in life you ignored them but in death they become the most amazing person - humans are odd!

the money wouldn't be available for anything better.
It's just become a huge vanity project for large companies, the super wealthy, and Macron.

Many cathedrals have had a variety of fires and rebuilds over the years. It's inherent in having a building for getting on for 1,000 years. They were vanity projects then, at the rebuilds, and now.

It matters not that it might have some modern bits (they all do). It matters not that people may care less, or more. I just don't want to hear about it any more, until it's finished.

Oh. and the Catholic Church should pay FFS.

Nope, it wasn't built by slaves. It was built by Carpenters, Master Masons, Craft Masons, Apprentices and labourers. All of whom were paid. The local populace would have been paid by itinerant Masons who lodged with them, the Apprentices would have resided in the "Lodges" built on the site, to guard the site, the materials and tools. The local community would've benefitted greatly by having so many people from out of the area working on the building of the Cathedral.
