And where did he say that it needs to be rebuilt?Originally posted by zerosum View PostRichard Dawkins on Twitter about Notre Dame: 'This is terrible news. One of the world's outstanding architectural treasures.'

A block of flats for the ISIS immigrants will go down terribly well. Why don't you go over and suggest it...?Originally posted by Eirikur View PostWhy rebuild at all, it's a church ffs, built by slaves to empower the clergy over the peasants. Think they could build something nicer in its place

nothing odd. Just a lot more free press with a burnt down cathedral than a shabby one.Originally posted by Halo Jones View PostIf people / companies want to pay for it then crack on, if the majority of the populus agree on a tax for it crack on. if the UK government offers "aid" for it then I will complain.
But I find it strange that these companies did not step up and give their money when they were looking to repair / maintain the building, as someone said on the radio- its a bit like a distant relative dying: in life you ignored them but in death they become the most amazing person - humans are odd!

the money wouldn't be available for anything better.Originally posted by Eirikur View Post100s of millions will be spent to restore a building for religious freaks who believe in an imaginary sky fairy. Money that could have been spent on much better things
It's just become a huge vanity project for large companies, the super wealthy, and Macron.
Factbox: Donors pledge over 700 million euros to rebuild Notre-Dame cathedral - Reuters
Many cathedrals have had a variety of fires and rebuilds over the years. It's inherent in having a building for getting on for 1,000 years. They were vanity projects then, at the rebuilds, and now.
It matters not that it might have some modern bits (they all do). It matters not that people may care less, or more. I just don't want to hear about it any more, until it's finished.
Oh. and the Catholic Church should pay FFS.

And if that offers comfort to those in need of it then you'd deprive them of that comfort? That's rather selfish of you, don't you think?Originally posted by Eirikur View Post100s of millions will be spent to restore a building for religious freaks who believe in an imaginary sky fairy. Ignorance is a lack of knowledge.Originally posted by Zigenare View PostNope, it wasn't built by slaves. It was built by Carpenters, Master Masons, Craft Masons, Apprentices and labourers. All of whom were paid. The local populace would have been paid by itinerant Masons who lodged with them, the Apprentices would have resided in the "Lodges" built on the site, to guard the site, the materials and tools. The local community would've benefitted greatly by having so many people from out of the area working on the building of the Cathedral.

If you have further interest may I suggest you research "Compagnons du Devoir et du Tour de France". Lack of knowledge can be cured, ignorance, probably not.
