Well that's inneresting - I've always pressed the button when applying the handbrake. Thought you were supposed to.

I was always taught to do so, this is so the ratchet does not wear to prevent such issues. You can pull it one click to make sure its locked.

The last car I had (and my current car) had electronic hand brakes.. great until they break. £1000 to get it fixed when it stopped working.

No need, just get into the habit of leaving the manual in gear, unless you are parking on a steep hill that's plenty enough to ensure the car stays in place.

Btw, why not buy an automatic? That would have stopped your car from rolling across the road.
