Agents come to mind. I used to have company names on profiles but after the typical agent bollocks about knowing so and so who worked there, I took them off. In fact I recall doing a contract and the main switchboard contacted me stating there was a Mr. Slimy Toad trying to get a hold of me urgently and could I ring him back on this number (this was in Germany and the number was a UK one) and when I did it was an agent who had pulled the information from a profile with company name on and decided to try his luck and actually lied to say he was a software supplier to the client.

How come?

Not a bad tactic if you've worked for a load of small startups or where the name of the company may not enhance the CV. If one guy has all FTSE100 companies and the other has a load of unknowns it could work against him.

Must admit I can't help think leaving names out would work with your standard sausage factory agent though.

I don't put company names on my profiles, just the industry I've worked in. When actually at the interview then I will mention the company if required

I've left CSC as CSC on mine. They are big enough and everyone but the newest millenials/generation Z or whatever will know who they are. If it's that long ago it's probably not that useful to the CV so will leave it.

Smaller companies that might not be known out of their circles then I'd do as Dark says.

The name at the time, follow up with the company who acquired them.

i.e. I worked for small corp who were bought by big corp when I had been there X months.

or I worked for Big Corp U who then spun off as small corp V who were then bought by Corp W, X, Y & Z 2 years after I left.

Depends who you're talking to - I tend to use the current name but if people look confused then I run through previous names until one clicks.

I do this. Especially important if you go back because you want the long term relationship to be very clear.

Personally, I think just putting $NewName is a little too close to the wind in most cases. Just because some startup was acquired by IBM ten years after you worked there doesn't mean you worked for IBM.
