Did that in my last ever permie job, it was agreed with the manager at the interview. A few months later a director said I had to do 9-5. After a few weeks of spending 5 or more hours a day in traffic I chucked it in.

Current client co is a joy on that front.
Very big on flexible working, so lots of the permies do compressed weeks.

Remote working is encouraged up to 2 days a week for everyone, contractors included, after an initial period.

Never seen anyone give a toss about hours.

As I said flexibility seems to be the norm now, often with core hours say 10-4 or 11-3. Good for commuting, good for working parents, good for morale for people to feel they're cared about.

Although if you're working with people in other countries it gets more tricky.

Forcing people to do a 9-5 in a city centre is nuts - it just increases the commute time by at least an hour a day due to traffic..

Client before this one. Did a few stints of remote work in the evenings at short notice - nothing major just 4-5 nights an hour each.

Then a few weeks later client manager had a moan because I was stuck in traffic and got in a 905am.

Lets just say I didnt offer to help out in the evenings after that...

I have had a bank contract which had flexi time, one which didn't care what hours you worked as long as you were there when there were meetings and all of the work got done to the required standard and one that went to the effort of emailing you to complain if you got in a 9:05 and not 9. However, that was not the company, that was just that one manager.

My current IB contract is the same, although I don't have the difficult manager.

In fact my "manager" does not even contact me about anything

Every banking contract I've ever worked expected a 8.30-9 start, which is not unusual. In most professional working environments rolling in at 10am shows a serious lack of discipline.

I worked for a PS client and the amount of people who started at 10am was astonishing. Especially given that some of the lazy feckers only lived a short walk away.
