I'd probably call myself an atheist, but would never look down on those who hold however ridiculous a belief in their sky fairy of choice. Who knows, some of them may be actually right.

As I suppose he would be as most of them would be poorer than him and would not offer any sort of threat to him. They do not represent the British establishment, the armed services, the wealth creators so they do not fall within his circle of dislike.

Having said that his popularity with his constituents may have something to do with this "given Islington has one of the highest incidents of mental illness in the country".
