Botswana is the world's largest producer of diamonds and the trade has transformed it into a middle-income nation.

Yet arab states have oil and are the richest nations in the world. I think Botswana is being fleeced! They need to negotiate better with their agents.

although I still think collecting gems, uncut or otherwise, is an idiotic investment these days as artificial gem technology proceeds apace and can doubtless be ramped up and advanced even faster where there is a technical demand for it (better heat sinks, lasers, squeezed light, etc, etc ..)
