Previously on "What buttons do I push on LinkedIn to drum up trade?"
Never used LinkedIn; I registered my latest placement about 3.5 years ago but got sick of all the tulip coming in about idiots I worked with 10 years ago, or randoms wanting to "Connect".
I find whenever you update your CV on the main job sites, this seems to send out loads of alerts to agents in the background and you soon get them sniffing round wanting to know what you're after.
Like I say I've not updated my CV in over 3 years but I still get phonecalls and emails enquiring about availability.
Heaven forgive me, but I'll give you a serious answer.
For LinkedIn to work for you, you need to drive traffic to your profile. To do that you need to update it regularly so it notifies people in your network and make those updates relevent, not just "Look at my new profile pic, it's awsome."
Write blog posts on topics relevent to your CV or the roles you are looking for and load them with key words that show up in job ad's you would want to apply for.
They don't have to be huge, but they do need to be worth reading if at all possible, and bear in mind your target market ranges from Pimps (Clueless) to Hiring Managers (not quite so clueless) and senior techies (Cluefull, hopefully).
Aim for one a week if you can (hence keeping them short and sweet). It's a valid tactic to link back to someone elses relevent post and add your own comments, provided they add something more than "I agree" or "This is really cool".
