Being in engineering rather than financial I was lucky If I got £35 an hour when I was a contractor, only time I got a lot more was very short term things.
Still, now I'm retired, I've got a detached house - no mansion but more than big enough for me and the #1 son I never got rid of, a lot more money coming in from various pensions (despite all the various ripoffs!) than I spend, and quite a big savings reserve in case of an unlikely emergency. Did I invest wisely? Not really, too f* boring, just bunged stuff in things at random when I got round to it.
The moral of this tale is don't worry about it. If you are a contractor you will probably do ok and better than 90% of the UK population.
