I had one of those hacked Myfi's - worked until Three cottoned on it was a phone sim and it stopped working.

Rubbish, two Apple Airports in my (stone-built) house, one next to the modem, one in the data-centre/shed 40 feet away, works better/faster than the home plugs I had before, even the gig ones.

That is probably due to poor wiring and "loud" transformers elsewhere on the circuit...

Let's be honest here. Wireless is pretty rubbish. Even in a good spot, the signal strength varies wildly from second to second. Right now you can stream a movie. In 15 seconds ? Not so much. I have 2 access points in my very small house and it is still barely adequate. The technology is just a bit of a toy.

But on topic, the hotel network is likely saturated by guests all streaming and surfing. Perhaps you can get a better signal in the bar ? Works with Premier Inns.

My Sky router is in the corner of the ground floor of my 3-storey house. I can watch Netflix/iPlayer/etc in bed on the iPad on the top floor just fine. Maybe you have thicker walls...

You have to get a Mobile Broadband tariff, the standard All You Can Eat don't work in tablets or MiFi devices

^ Same here. My wireless allows 2-3 people in the house to stream simultaneously

You can make wireless a little less painless.
Buy an Alfa Networks AWUS036NHA external wireless card, the antenna on them is already very good
but you can also get one of these

That way you should get a really good signal.
If you want to take it further i use an old netbook running LXLE create wifi hotspot and share it with the wired ethernet adaptor . In turn this is plugged in to a small switch which i connect another laptop, desktop, ps4 and other device.
I have it automatically connect to a B public wifi hotspot and have a small powershell script, that i run as a service/scheduled task, that detects if the connection is alive, if it isn't it will auto login to the bt landing page so the connection stays seamlessly connected.

This is purely for when i am working away, staying in a rented room or hotel.
