Hard to say. Could be different road materials. This tarmac that is used here is hard and seems to keep the water on the surface. Plus it also seems to become ruddy slippery with just a little water on top. And why can reflective paint be used on the roads. FFS when its dark and raining cats and dogs they seems to become totally obscured by water.

It doesn't snow enough in England to make it worthwhile. It's actually cheaper not to buy the equipment and have to maintain it plus pay out compensation.

Unlike places that lie in snow for months the temperature in England varies so widely in Winter you get a much better return on your investment spending the money on flood defence equipment (if you live in such an area) than on snow equipment. Simply because in England you can get flooding all year round but it snows to cause disruption about every 4 years.

I get that people not used to ice find it treacherous - and really it doesn't take a lot, if it's icy it's icy - but how airports struggle I don't understand. We're shortly flying to Helsinki and then to the Arctic (literally) north. Not only do they have temperatures way below zero for months on end but it snows a lot, and planes don't seem to care.
Do they adapt planes/airports in some way to land in icy conditions?

    I blame twitter myself.

We life in a hysterical age, with a real-time media, who act with all the rationality of a teenage-girl who's just been dumped by her first boyfriend on the day her cat died and she started her period.

Actually that's doing a dis-service to teenage girls.
