Employment Contract Termination Advice
Do not sign a contract with any employer unless you are willing to fulfill all obligations. They will take you a court over such matters. If you decide to "sign on" contract, then read the contract very properly, read the "fine print" carefully and ensure that there are "no penalties" that may be withheld from your salary must you decide to leave the job before the 12 months is over. There is a reason if they are asking you to sign a 12 month contract. Employees who can usually keep employees don’t ask employees to sign a contract. Imagine why someone would ask you to sign such a contract.

Yes, they can sue you for breach of contract if they want. They can also mention to ypur new employer you are still under contract which could get you finished at your new place and if the new employer is in the same field of work or supplier/customer of your old one sue you for further breach of contract. If your contract stipulates you cannot work for anyone else whilst under contract with them they could have further grounds to sue you.
To get out either honour your notice period or negotiate a way out. Employers don't tend to want people around that don't want to be there.
Don't try the stupid phone in sick bollocks. It is likely you will need evidence from a doctor which you can't produce giving them even more reason to come after you.

In permie- world, all employees, regardless of the number of hours they work per week, are entitled to receive a written statement from their employer, within two months of starting work. The statement describes the main terms of the contract of employment.
The statement must give details about:-job title
• wages
• hours of work
• holiday entitlement
• sick pay
• pension schemes
• notice
• grievance, dismissal and disciplinary procedure.
Although you can agree specific notice with your employer, which forms part of the terms of your contract of employment, there are statutory minimum notice periods which apply.
These are:-
• Between 1 month and 2 years worked – 1 week’s notice
• Between 2 and 12 years – 1 week’s notice for every year worked, up to a maximum of 12 weeks
In Contractor World, I don't know if it is mandatory to have the notice periods stipulated, but I would certainly expect to see it in any contract I entered into, or have some written addendum if it was not standard in the agencies’ paperwork.
If you have a fixed term contract (which I am assuming you have, and are not a permie!), the minimum notice period fixed-term employees are entitled to is the same as for permies, and my understanding is that these entitlements work the other way round as well :unless stated otherwise in the contract.
In short, to echo the other posters here - what does your contract say?

I'd imagine your contract might have a notice period, like most employment contracts (I'm not sure if employment contracts *have* to have a notice period though). Have you checked?
