The OP doesn't even have 16k in the bank.

Anyway, IIRC there are quite a few restrictions surrounding those visas and they aren't aimed at contractors. There was a bill to improve access for foreign entrepreneurs/start-ups, but immigration reform in the US is going nowhere fast in the current climate.

How long does OP want to do it for?

One way in to the US is via an E2 visa where you start or buy a business. OP could buy an existing IT business/consultancy and maintain it whilst contracting services out through it.

Obviously the E2 business would need to maintain US jobs so surely with some due diligence one could find and procure one that has customers and the employees to maintain it:

Contracting in the US isn't going to happen due to the aforementioned visa issues - Canada is realistic, but only to those of us that live in the real world.

It's all irrelevent anyway, the only way in is via H1B (i.e. Work Permit) and that's gonna tie the OP to the visa issuer (so not contracting) and from what my US friends tell me their limited form of contracting is more akin to FTC...

There is a reason why the attacks we make against him on the business forum don't result in the bans we would otherwise receive.....

If your wife is unwell, with a pre-existing condition, then you need to be earning shed loads to consider contracting in a country where you would have no health cover and no insurance.
