1 hours commute and a 30 minute walk!, you have it good, I have a 2 hour drive and a 60 minute walk, not only that but the rate is so low I can't afford an umbrella, so if it's p*ssing down with rain I get soaking wet.

I've got a 50 mile trip to work every morning, This road trip currently takes me around 1 hour and 15 minutes, through the traffic then I have a 30 minute walk from where I park the car to my desk. Then the return trip home.

I've been doing this for nearly two months. I don't think I have had a contract in the last 2 years that been less then an hours commute.

I thought this was normal

Out of interest - whys it 30 mins walk? Aint there anywhere closer?

Must admit I wouldnt fancy that. 1hr plus drive then potential 30 mins in the pissing down rain...

Did two years commuting by train from Edinburgh to Glasgow, door-to-door was 1.5hrs, not as bad as some journeys but I hated every second of it. I always ended up falling asleep on the train back and would wake up really groggy and feeling cr*p for the rest of the evening. No provisions were made to work from home.

Then worked in NL when I had a fun commute using tram/train/bus, which was an hour door-door, didn't mind that one bit as all the changing of transport kept things interesting! Plus could work from home and when back in the UK, really excellent working conditions and didn't mind one bit the days when I had to stay in the office late or be away all week for meetings etc.

Next role means a bus commute of between 20mins-1 hr depending on traffic, lots of reading time available!

I suppose everybody's attitude is different. Personally I hate changing transport during the trip, it ruins the reading time. And I can't read on a bus, I get travel-sick; despite having had a 45-minute bus ride to school when I was younger, when I not only read on it but did all my homework on the bus).

its better to stay closer to the place of work during they day you work and you will be much happier instead of travelling everyday.

Not if you have family you want to get home to every day it isn't.

Even with half term this week still had a 2 hr journey home due to (several) accidents...grrrr

TOGAF templates

I'm currently 75 miles away from home,so I stay away Mon-Fri, I find it better as I'm a 10min walk to Clientco, I can work extra hours on weekdays and leave early on Fridays. Did a 50 mile each way commute a couple of years ago and that was knackering.

You mentioned on a TOGAF blog you had some templates, how do i PM you on this system?

Must be mad. Admitedly, taking a holiday is costly in terms of lost income but still. If you think like that you'll never ever take a day off and work yourself into an early grave!

Luckily this role at Radbroke does kind of feel like being on holiday. I get to work from home when I need to and work 35 hours a week close to home. Effectively I can be home for 4:30pm every day and still have the rest of the day with family, friends etc. I also made it clear I wouldn't be doing extra hours because of the relatively low rate. Kind of all balances out in the end.

Also Radbroke is great in the spring/summer/autumn.

Not taken a holiday for 18 months and won't be taking any time off until contract finishes in 8 months.... If I get another contract straight after that then I will take it. Bought a house recently and spending a bomb on building work and decoration.

I've thought about < 5 days per week too, but this would mean i'd never get to do a couple of months off at a time, and the warchest wouldn't get much of a boost. Your holidays/time off would be spread out across those 2 days in each week of the year.

Yeh true. But depends whether you could work 3 days and still take a bit of time off as well.

Never been one to rack up the money for the sake of it. If you can afford to do this then why not. Life aint a game to rack up the most cash before you die. (As I keep telling me old man who wont spend bugger all and his savings are piling up)
