    Solent,

Live local to you and have been contracting in the same skill area for the past 9 years (never had to take a contract out of the county). Best of Luck !

    Well done. But...

...remember to sober up by New Year. After all, you've got a job to go to.

Well the suits have wrapped up and the company has gone into Administration, so virtually everyone was made redundant. I have been kept on to assist them to start a new company but.... Contracting here I come again... Interview today, verbal confirmation from agent and contract's in the post. A very local company and long term gig. As you can tell I'm a very happy man and what a Christmas present !

My philosopy is to work hard, earn decent money, as I said in previous thread, fair days pay for a fair days work but no corporate bullsh*t.

Contracting, child care, and when mums available (if she wants her daughter) juggling with Balls, I know how a single parent feels.

Ah well, there's people worse off than us...I must admit I dont contribute enough to this forum, but it does boost up my day as there as so much I relate to.
Good luck, I've been local the last 18 months after working away for most of last 20 years. Typically, as soon as you start working away you'll start to see local jobs again!

That's almost my philosophy too - apart from the working hard bit.

What sort of salary are you on for .NET work?

If contracting why go away? I'm in the same boat - 2 young children so would not consider staying away but i've always managed to stay local. I'd stay put, keep your ears open and something will come up.

SSP kicks in after 4 days but an employer cannot ask you to provide evidence of sickness until the 8th day you are off sick (so you'd get a nice week)

Go to your doctor. Tell him that you're having trouble sleeping. That you feel a sense of dread before going into work, that you having difficult in making even the most day to day decisions, and sometimes, suddenly, without identifiable cause, you have feelings of deep anxiety.

That's what I did when I was in a crap permie position. Got signed of for four weeks for stress.

How long do you have to be employed to get decent employee rights?

They don't sign you off, your doctor does. They have nothing to do with assessing how fit for work you are - if you are unfit for work, don't go in.

You can sign yourself off for up to 4 days (IIRC) if it's 5 or more you need a doctors certificate.

Why...I had a young daughter, meant more quality time with her and the war chest was diminishing. Over the last four months the company has faced difficulties (bl**dy typical) down to a four day a week and 20% cut in Salary, earning less now than I have ever done. Reduced 11 developers (including contractors) down to one (me). Refusing my holiday requests (13 days to use before the end of the year).

OK, looking at the market, it seems to be evenly balanced between Contract and Perm. CWjobs, Jobserve etc every day. Looking at options. Perm I thought would be great but it seems not to be the case as they are very much a muchness in this climate. Recommendations???

Primary skills, .NET (specifically C#, VB.NET, Ajax and SQL Server)

I'm certainly getting a rough ride with the Company I'm working for, I'm all for a fair days work for a fair days pay but they are taking the mickey...
Just goes to show...permie is not always the best Plan B option in the current economic situation...
