Which direction - Now what ?

Yes, I must admit I left for the darkside just under a year ago, after 13 years of contracting, I went permanent. Why...I had a young daughter, meant more quality time with her and the war chest was diminishing. Over the last four months the company has faced difficulties (bl**dy typical) down to a four day a week and 20% cut in Salary, earning less now than I have ever done. Reduced 11 developers (including contractors) down to one (me). Refusing my holiday requests (13 days to use before the end of the year).

OK, looking at the market, it seems to be evenly balanced between Contract and Perm. CWjobs, Jobserve etc every day. Looking at options. Perm I thought would be great but it seems not to be the case as they are very much a muchness in this climate. Recommendations???

Primary skills, .NET (specifically C#, VB.NET, Ajax and SQL Server)

I'm certainly getting a rough ride with the Company I'm working for, I'm all for a fair days work for a fair days pay but they are taking the mickey...

WTF? Just tell them you're taking your holiday. You're the only developer they've got

Gosh, you feel alright? You look a bit poorly. You're not going down with something are you? There is a lot of it about. Could it be stress?

If you know what I mean.
How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror.

Now that was ironic, dropped a fence post on my leg last week, 22 Stitches, I was so hoping they would sign me off. I know (not blowing my trumpet), being the only developer, if I left development on crucial projects would stop. Can I risk it, they say they are trying to recruit more staff but I am tempted. I put in for two days leave over four weeks ago and they declined. I really have to take the risk and go for it...

Solent, one day real soon they will tell you they cannot afford to pay you last month's salary "but would you mind staying on until things get better?"

Get your CV updated and start applying for new jobs. They've even given you a day off a week to do it.

When the time comes to leave, tell them you had considered doing them for constructive dismissal but have decided to be lenient and instead give them 1 day's notice.

Just goes to show...permie is not always the best Plan B option in the current economic situation...

They don't sign you off, your doctor does. They have nothing to do with assessing how fit for work you are - if you are unfit for work, don't go in.

You can sign yourself off for up to 4 days (IIRC) if it's 5 or more you need a doctors certificate.

Go to your doctor. Tell him that you're having trouble sleeping. That you feel a sense of dread before going into work, that you having difficult in making even the most day to day decisions, and sometimes, suddenly, without identifiable cause, you have feelings of deep anxiety.

That's what I did when I was in a crap permie position. Got signed of for four weeks for stress.

How long do you have to be employed to get decent employee rights?

SSP kicks in after 4 days but an employer cannot ask you to provide evidence of sickness until the 8th day you are off sick (so you'd get a nice week)
