I've heard that story from plenty of contractors.
In some cases the person lying has been caught out at interview.

I've never had my CV checked out in ten years, and that includes SC.
Maybe I will get hauled across the hot coals by a vetting company for my next contract, and maybe I will 'tidy up' my CV beforehand... But there comes a point in time where even I cannot remember the correct dates and skill sets for some gigs. I've worked at companies and departments that don't exist any more, places overseas and for people I have long forgotten. Good luck to any vetting company digging though that heap!

His short 6 week stint had become 6 months, the work he had claimed to have done bore no relation to what he did. His CV was binned by the consultancy.
I am honest on my CV and this little incident illustrates to me perfectly why I should be.

If we all gave warm cuddles to the idiots there would be no incentive for them to think before they post and we would be knee deep in them. This is a public forum of faceless strangers so you are gonna get the full spectrum of opinions whether people like it or not.
I did squirm when I read the OP's post I admit. I haven't however been on the bench for as long as them, so don't know how far I would go in that position.

getting myself worked up to the level that Northernlad regularly seems to, feels a little futile

If you have been out of work for ages it's probably because some lying b*****d keeps getting your work. Ok if you can't beat them join them fair enough but do it quietly and certainly don't come on a public board and condone it.
I wonder how different this link would have been had most of us here knew for sure we have lost good work to liars.
If other people lie to get a role, that is their choice and will probably backfire on them at some point. I don't condone it. If I knew for a fact that a liar had got a role over me, I doubt I would waste too much time procrastinating about it - tulip happens.

What you are doing is judging other people when you know nothing about their circumstances, that is what is unforgivable.

Don't assume that just because your standards are low that the same applies to everyone else.

It's easy to be quick to judge until you've been out of work for ages, I guess.

I am so glad that I don’t have to go through all this anymore; I’d never get a job. Not because of gaps (4 weeks off – been out of work too long! What is that about FFS), but because of what I HAVE been doing.
