Max is quoting 'historical' rates (there are a few guys that I know of still on £ 500+ for Java/C++), I am quoting current rates, ie what they are paying now which is close to the 400 rather than 500 mark for a good coder.

That's not really what I said. My comment was that this is not my area but I would have expected the rates to be closer to the figures quoted by max that those by Dow Jones.

That won't be the major problem for me. I already have a good understanding of real OOP. I just have to get used to the syntax and environments.

It takes years...to really get a good handle on java, such that you don't look like a d*ck in the interview.

The rates are a joke because it is to easy to outsource to India and eastern Europe at a faction of the cost of a contractor in the UK

As to what to move into...whole different and complicated debate. Something I recommend you research yourself as it not only depends on what you can potentially earn but your actual migration path to it (aka where are you coming from and with what relevant experience)

Yea, I agree with you, which is why I'm trying to move over to Java...

I've had various levels of exposure to Java at a commercial level and personal, so I feel comfortable with the switchover. I just need to start doing some more personal projects to refamiliarize myself with it and maybe try jumping into a junior position first and then go from there...

It will be a lot of work moving from PHP to Java, just getting your head arounf real OOP will take a while.
