That's not really what I said. My comment was that this is not my area but I would have expected the rates to be closer to the figures quoted by max that those by Dow Jones.

It will be a lot of work moving from PHP to Java, just getting your head arounf real OOP will take a while.

The rates are a joke because it is to easy to outsource to India and eastern Europe at a faction of the cost of a contractor in the UK

As to what to move into...whole different and complicated debate. Something I recommend you research yourself as it not only depends on what you can potentially earn but your actual migration path to it (aka where are you coming from and with what relevant experience)

Yea, I agree with you, which is why I'm trying to move over to Java...

I've had various levels of exposure to Java at a commercial level and personal, so I feel comfortable with the switchover. I just need to start doing some more personal projects to refamiliarize myself with it and maybe try jumping into a junior position first and then go from there...

It takes years...to really get a good handle on java, such that you don't look like a d*ck in the interview.

Java= £ 400
C++= £ 450

ABAP £400-£600 depending on experience and, to some extent, location.
