FTSE down another 3% this morning. It's going to be a rough ride!

My main work is actually in the field of games development at the moment (leading development on something somewhat akin to WoW, but for kids). I wonder if entertainment is more or less affected by a recession? These days, entertainment seems SUCH a massive industry I'd almost think that games and films might do better as everyone seeks to escape the misery of the real world!

    I'd worry

Hiring for a junior support person in Slough. Lots (20) of CV's from last Thursday, many from on bench IT managers etc. not anyone actually matching my expectations yet, i.e. fresh from Uni.

    State of the Market

This year can go one of too ways. Either drift along not too bad and then pick up towards September or just get slowly worse and worse until there is practically no work. Hopefully it will drift along. I've been through two recessions now and they are not nice. No market and hardly any skill set will be left untouched apart from thoes with current SC, DV & higher clearance.

At the moment in my skillset (Unix Admin) things are very good and the banks still seem to be hiring.

My thinking is that this year will be a blip.

I've just spent two weeks on the bench and started new contract today. I had loads of calls, and I even had to turn my phone off at times! OK half the calls were perm roles, but the market it still lively from the agents' side.

Trouble is the clients have caught a cold. My CV went forward to over a dozen places and I only had three interview requests in two weeks. Some of these roles I should have been a shoe-in.

Another thing I notice is a lack of big new projects out there. I think if things don't pick up in April then we're in a spot of trouble

The negative views are mainly down to global credit crisis which will mean some companies/industries will be tightening budgets

While there is likely to be some downturn, your skill set and industry will determine if that downturn will be barely noticeable or mean months sitting on the bench
