You don't need to get them to state exl VAT. It's standard in B2B that VAT is excluded.

I had received a contract from my umbrella where the agency had stated the fee as £x per day. I told them to get it changed to £x per day excluding VAT . The agency has apparently declined to change the wording citing the contract is between the agency and umbrella and so they would not change it.
