I might be looking for my next gig in Reading now!

Spent 3.5 months in Reading recently.

It is ok. For a set period of time.

It is small enough you can walk
Nice Thames walks
Nice canal walks
<modsnip>
No real ghetto areas - everywhere is OK for living
Close to London for drinks out
45 min away from Heathrow
75 min away from Gatwick
Some nice pubs

Cons:
Expensive rents, but much cheaper than London

If you got a good contract for 3-6-9 month it is OK.

Maidenhead and Dudley, two of my "choice" places...

Maidenhead is pretty though some of the people are knobs.

Dudley isn't but the people are OK.

Maidenhead sounds a lovely place. Don't they have a regatta there?

Dudley I've been to; did some work for Dudley Borough Council, AKA the teat that feeds the multitudinous, obese descendants of cannon fodder that can be seen lumbering around the town on mobility scooters in search of their next free meal ticket.


To be fair, you can get a good pork and apple roll in all the local butchers every lunch time though. Must be some local tradition.

Indeed, I'm always amazed at what constitutes most people's definition of a sh1thole.

I can only assume they're not very well travelled.

I remember going to Gateshead once - an absolute depressing hellhole dominated by a derict 1960s monstrosity of a multistorey carpark.

I also seem to remember there was some kind of supermarket there that specialised in out of date food. What the legal implications of that are I do not know....

Yep that Tesco Extra was something to behold....

I went to the Slough Trading Estate and was extremely disappointed as it was one of the better trading estates I've been to.

It had a Greggs on it? Awesome.

I like Reading too, though in the 6 years between jobs there the number of people working there has skyrocketed. Sweeney Todd's do great pies and you can take them away for half the eat in price Sweeney and Todd | Sweeney Todd Restaurant | Reading

Knew a few people who got taken over by them and our Service Delivery Manager is just about to start there. Best try to avoid the festival if you can 26 August

I was being rude I have no problem with Reading.

Though the curries are better in Slough.

I was actually hoping to cryptically reveal myself to a fellow poster - there are so many contractors here I was thinking there must at least be one other subscriber to this site.

Then again, they're all Indian so I guess not.

Regarding Reading itself though, I've been to far worse places. I actually wander through some very pleasant leafy burbs on my lunchtime visits to the library.
