I am and proud of it, why neglect one of my few skills?Originally posted by heyya99 View PostYou people are so grumpy.

The rest of the posters here who are slating you are just tired of seeing the same old questions, being trotted out in the same format by people who then don't read the responses and/or try to argue that the wisdom they sought is wrong.

How come you haven't learned how to use the search function then yet? Business phones have been done to death and the advice is always exactly the same.Originally posted by heyya99 View PostI was encouraged by most people on here to not start contracting. I've now had 3 years of successful contract on more money than I've ever been on so I take everything on this forum with a pinch of salt.

Kindly define a "successful contract" for us mere mortals.Originally posted by heyya99 View PostI was encouraged by most people on here to not start contracting. I've now had 3 years of successful contract on more money than I've ever been on so I take everything on this forum with a pinch of salt.

Rely on your accountant, that's why you have one (& common sense if possible) not a bunch of random armchair advisers/critics on here who, at times, are far too quick to pull the trigger on the uninitiated. They're generally a nice, knowledgeable bunch, but at times some of them show their teeth.

If my accountant gave me advice such as:Originally posted by SteelyDan View PostFTFY

which clearly contradicts the HMRC guidelines, I'd be firing them not relying on them. Each to their own, but having a business phone is one of the clearest things in the HMRC manuals, and the accountant is talking about having to keep personal calls to a minimum, in direct contradiction to the explicit HMRC rulesOriginally posted by heyya99 View PostWhen I asked my accountant about putting a hone through my company, she said I could do it as long as I 'keep my personal calls to a minimum'.

If by "one man bands" you mean Limited Company Contractors then yes they do.Originally posted by SimonMac View PostThree don't offer business contracts to one man bands, open an account with O2, you will pay slightly more than with three but you can have it completely in the company name so depends how big your bills are to say if its worth while

This. If the accountant doesn't get such basic things right as this, what else are they missing?Originally posted by TheCyclingProgrammer View PostI don't know what guidelines you are looking at but personal/business use mix is irrelevant. The provision of a single mobile phone to a director/employee is exempt from tax. It's that simple.
EIM21780 - Particular benefits: mobile telephones: general overview
EIM21779 - Particular benefits: mobile telephones: exemption for 2006/07 onwards: details
Provision of additional phones are subject to the normal wholly and exclusively rule.
