    Only downside to this is that on the one occasion I had an HMRC check, the inspector looked through my accounts, saw an expense and asked if I could show the receipt for it. At that point you hope you have got your envelopes correct. And I had made her 2 cups of tea.

    I used to never claim for lunch but then I got a gig where I stayed away and it's obviously a fair expense under those circs so I did. Then I started commuting to the same place of work (about 90 minutes each way) and read the rules which seem pretty clear that you can claim under the 10 hours / 24 month rule.

    So from now on I will claim just to ensure the cost goes on the correct (company) account rather than my own. But though I agree the sums are paltry and the £4 tax saving on spending £20pw on a sandwich for lunch are small, I do it on principle.
