Only downside to this is that on the one occasion I had an HMRC check, the inspector looked through my accounts, saw an expense and asked if I could show the receipt for it. At that point you hope you have got your envelopes correct. And I had made her 2 cups of tea.Originally posted by stek View PostI collect as many receipts as I can and stuff 'em in to envelopes marked 'Exp, Mar 2013' or whatever so they are bulging with irrelevant stuff such as ATM slips, receipts and CC slip too, as much as possible in the hope that even if I do get investigated the HMRC guy will just say 'Oh, that's a lot - looks ok to me, it's fine' After I've bunged some dodgy cloudy Russian hooch-vodka I got off AtW in his tea of course...
But I'm claiming scale rates anyway...

You could buy £500 quids worth of sandwiches in January and pretend it's the company Xmas party!

No, some idiot posts might be genuine. And many posters only post in the Professional forums.

I used to never claim for lunch but then I got a gig where I stayed away and it's obviously a fair expense under those circs so I did. Then I started commuting to the same place of work (about 90 minutes each way) and read the rules which seem pretty clear that you can claim under the 10 hours / 24 month rule.Originally posted by eek View PostPersonally it fell down well before then. I've never claimed for lunch as:-
1) I would be buying it regardless.
2) claiming for it as a company expense only saves me 20%. I can't face the paperwork or the investigation risk for the 60p-£1 it saves me.
So from now on I will claim just to ensure the cost goes on the correct (company) account rather than my own. But though I agree the sums are paltry and the £4 tax saving on spending £20pw on a sandwich for lunch are small, I do it on principle.
