Oddly the longest I went without a contract was following my longest ever contract which lasted nearly two and a half years. With hindsight - plus Brexit happened - I had a not very exciting contract at the top of my CV and agents didn't get past it.

Oddly my rate has been quite good over the last year and I would have had a quick turnaround between two contracts had sign off and Christmas not got in the way. In both instances the agent came to me though.

I think we are in the process of a fairly major adjustment in the IT contracting industry. Once the City decided that inside IR35 was the way to go then the argument for remaining a contractor was weakened, although there is seemingly still enough contractors willing to do it.

I would add that getting several hundred applications for a contract or job isn't a new thing. The difference might be a higher percentage are actually capable of doing the role at the moment.

I know nothing of your skillset or sector but a lot of people are struggling at the moment to find contracts so unless you have done your research I would think long and hard before jumping ship.
