i remember there was a brief moment where apricot started to shift decent numbers of units. and then it all went pear shaped. quality or price or something?

There was - under the ownership of Mitsubishi Electric they ramped up production at a dedicated plant in Glenrothes, and managed to displace Compaq to become a supplier to PC World. The main issue was cost - Apricot was tied to resellers, and would never sell direct. So the price to the customer always factored in a profit to the reseller, and not (as it turned out) to Apricot

The quality of the kit was, it has to said, awesome. Almost everything from the cases to the motherboards, was designed and built by Apricot - another issue that contributed to the end cost.
