    Despite the credo of the freelancer being "never do owt without getting paid", I'm doing this for the sheer research interest in it and if I can prove that it works I'll be giving it to MoD for free.

    I'm a former soldier and seeing guys being killed in such a random manner really gets on my nerves, tbh.

              (Although unless you are comparing primitive types, you should of course use - and if necessary override - the Object.equals() method )

              As to what the C++ crowd get up to - well, years of reading their code in Dr Dobbs Journal has left me none the wiser

              They probably redefine an operator or something:

                Opps. typo in my original post. I meant to say C++ should use equals.

                Point being I have caught bugs before where coders used == instead of equals in java. It was a very good coder too!
