Network Attached Storage - a low power computer geared towards providing network accessible storage. They tend to be small boxes with a firmware operating system, into which you plug hard drives.

I have a QNAP box many others are available from the likes of NetGear, Buffalo, etc.
Where are we going? And what’s with this hand basket?

They tend to provide many other services in addition to just simple storage, including media streaming services.

ah hah. sounds like my time machine. it's a 500gig apple thing that acts as a router booster and a hard drive. i can connect by ethernet but the wireless works perfectly well thanks - backs up to a schedule. i tend to turn it off and run it every now and then.

Sounds pretty similar, although a NAS isn't restricted to just backups - it's more of a mini file server.
