Got a message back today thanking me for letting them know that payment would be late, and telling me that they wouldn't impose any charge

Not bad of them, given it was purely my own mistake

I did that once - I've never paid interest on any of my credit cards, and it would pain me to do so. I found it annoying that the due date was usually a Monday, so if you remembered a couple of days before then there still wasn't time to settle it. So I just switched to paying the whole balance off by direct debit every month - that'll learn 'em.
